While some businesses might let every employee know companywide, many others will only inform the coworkers in your department/division, or just your immediate supervisor, and presume that the word will get around before you return to work. Therefore, you should make a point of informing your coworkers/professional peers that someone you love died and that youre grieving, either before or after you return to work so you wont need to continually relive it as people discover what happened. Grief is difficult, if not impossible, to escape for long because the littlest thing can trigger thoughts/reminders, such as the lingering aroma of a coworkers perfume or cologne in a hallway or stairwell; a colleague who happens to mention a movie or song that your loved one enjoyed; suddenly noticing that someone wears the same hairstyle or a similar outfit; the time on a clock indicating lunchtime, the end of the workday, the start of the weekend. You cannot possibly anticipate everything that might trigger your grief once you return to work, so you should plan how to handle the moments when your loss-response will interfere with how you want to act. If you find yourself crying suddenly, for example, where is the nearest restroom, stairwell, exit or private space you could use while you compose yourself, should you need it? If youre starting to feel sad about the death of your loved one during the workday, could you hold off until a scheduled break, lunch period or your finish-time arrives? Would your company temporarily allow you to work from home (telecommute), come in later or leave earlier for a while or allow you to exit the workplace for 10 to 20 minutes if you feel overwhelmed by your loss? Remember, allowing yourself to feel sad and even cry is perfectly normal and natural when youre grieving, so instead of fighting it, you should plan for it. Forgive Others As noted above, most people (and, therefore, most companies) often fail to respond as we might wish or need after we experience the death of someone close. The bereaved often keenly sense this after returning to work following a brief funeral-  or bereavement leave period or after using their vacation time, sick days or P.T.O. in order to arrange a funeral, memorial or interment service. Therefore, try to understand that your coworkers probably want to help you feel better in some way but just dont know how, so you should try to forgive them in advance. If you return to your workplace, for example, and discover that a colleague now feels distant, or you sense that people dont seem to drop by and chat with you like they did before the death occurred, youre probably not imagining things. Despite the many practical ways people can help  someone grieving a death, most people simply dont know how to comfort the bereaved and worry about saying or doing the wrong thing, so they  unconsciously distance themselves. If you understand that this might happen when you return to work, then you will be less likely to feel intentionally isolated or take things personally. Time will eventually soften the rough, painful edges of grief, so trust that both you and your coworkers will eventually find a new state of normal after the death of a loved one. Forgive Yourself Death creates an immense and immediate void in our lives that instantly shatters our sense of comfort, joy, and happiness. Summary and Synthesis of Mike Rose's "Lives on the Boundary" Carl Woodward's article in the Battalion relating to the idea that undergraduates do not care about important issues is on average totally inaccurate. "Lives on the Boundary", an excellent, informative essay by Mike Rose is a great example of how and why education should be equal for everyone. My fellow classmates and I mostly agree with Mike Rose's essay and disagree with Carl Woodward's opinion. We care about important issues and think that education should be equal for all. When Mike Rose was growing up he had only a few books available to him so he began to buy comic books because he "loved the heroes' virtuous omnipotence." And after comic books he moved to other items such as the instructions to his chemistry set and science fiction novels. He wrote very little in his schooling until his last year of high school where a teacher helped him find an interest in doing so. Although he was a good reader he did inefficiently on literacy tests. It can be said that he only thought about the concrete reality. Basically he was only educated by what entertained him, like Elizabeth Ewen's quote says (Rose 98-99). Rose further goes on in his essay to explain the circumstances of immigrants in our country and their struggle of learning the english language in order to improve their life style. He says "a failed education is social more then intellectual in origin." For example he explains the essence of a boy from Guatemala who saw his brother hacked apart, and how the boy has trouble learning the canonical education due to the trauma that he has experienced (Rose 99,101). Rose further goes on to argue that the great books are necessary and should be thought but the students must learn the material not just memorize it for regeration on exams. It would even be a good idea "to revise these messages and redress past wrongs would involve more than adding some new books to the existing cannon." (Rose 107) Basically Rose says that the cannon should be adjusted so that education will be more available for all. I feel that education should be equal for all and support most of Mike Rose's thoughts and ideas. It no difference what country or ethnic background people are from they should all have the same chances to succeed in America. However I feel that Rose favors the canonical or education by way of great books approach to education and I am more inclined to the revisionist's approach to education. I agree that the great books should still be read and taught but not necessarily in the numbers that they are now. Or maybe the teaching of the literature could change to a more student/learner friendly manner. Suppose that the students are allowed to pick from a list of the great books, which one would they want to read. If so then the student might actually get something out of the reading process, and the education system will have worked. When I discussed Mike Rose's essay with my fellow classmates I found that their thoughts and ideas regarding the article were very similar to my own. Drew suggested that "Students should read the great books that they are interested in because if they are not interested they won't get anything out of them." Although there are also orders that are put on Jimmie and Juice, they do not have as much responsibility as Junkie. : When their father makes the decision for Junkie to marry after graduation and tells him to quit his university studies and start to get a job; he agrees and completely goes with whatever his father says (p. 36). In this way, it is showing that Junkie is being a filial son and doing his rightful duties, but at the same time it makes him cowardly. It makes him become like a machine, a robot; doing whatever anyone says no matter how painful it is. It is understandable the Junkie is just trying to fulfill his duties and make sure that he does not go against his father or his grandfather or any elderly person, but still he loses all his freedom and basically his life. By doing what he does in the novel just basically means that he put his life into the hands of money else, someone who will control him for the rest of his life. And by the time that he is able to take control of his life and his goals, he would be old and not even capable of doing anything besides making orders all day to someone else. As for Jimmie and Juicer they are a bit more different. They understand the whole being filial to your elders thing, but they still do whatever to get what they want, especially Juice. Being the rebellious person that he is, he never listens and in fact wishes that he could leave his home and get the freedom that he wants. Juice knows of the whole family system and the whole fulfilling what your elders ask of you to do and understands it, but unlike his eldest brother, he wants to rebel. Throughout the novel, he wants the free life of being able to make decision for himself and so he disobeys the orders that are given to him. He forms a magazine article with his brother and other relatives, called Dawn, and from there he writes his own articles about the rebellion and publishes them. Even when Dawn is suspended, he and the rest of the members come up with a new magazine name, For the Masses, and intuition with their articles (p. 238). Juice is very bold and defiant that he shows no shame of calling out a person who has done wrong, like when he talked about Master Fen, shouting; That murderer-?old man Fen! (p. 250). Although Jimmie had tried to quiet him down, Juice continued and did not care whether anyone had heard him or not. When she hears from Jimmie about his school becoming coed, she immediately wants to transfer there. She wants to make a difference in the society and change the rules around, making all boys and girls being able to attend class together and learn the same things. (p. 32) As seen from this quote, Sin believes that there should be equality between boys and girls and so she insists on going to a coed school even if her mother or her grandmother, or anyone in her family rejects it. All three brothers encounter this and eventually two of them lose the love of their life, all because of being in a different status. He does not understand why someone has to go through something such as being forced to become a concubine and live an even miserable when they already have no relatives and is of a low class. She ended her life in the waters of the lake, and another girl, weeping, went to the Fen family to bury her youth to satisfy the passions of a lustful old dog (p. 228). Reaction of Chapters 1 and 2 I have just finishes reading the first 2 chapters of â€Å"A Night to Remember†. While I was reading the chapters I was putting all the pictures that I saw in my past with the book. When I was reading I saw that Walter Lord wasn’t that much into Similes and metaphors. He had great ways to get the reader interested and not bored. When I read books I normally look for where the plot is when the book starts. When I was reading this novel I thought that it was pretty interesting that right in the first chapter out of 10 he started the great accident with the iceberg. In chapter 1 I saw that John Jacob Astor and his wife were pretty calm; quote on page 15 ‘He was very calm and Mrs. Astor wasn’t a bit alarmed. I read a little more and I saw that everyone was mostly joking around and thinking nothing happened.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  When I was reading through chapter 1 I noticed a small part of it that made me put the book down and start thinking for about 10 minutes. This part was on page 3. It says that ‘For the next 37 seconds, Fleet and Lee stood quietly side by side, watching the ice draw nearer. Now they were almost on top of it and the ship didn’t turn’. I first thought of how they must have felt getting closer by the second to the iceberg. There hearts must have been beating fast from the shivering cold and nervousness from the iceberg. If I would have been standing there in the crows-nest, alive today I would have so many unanswered questions...

Legislation, policies and procedures in relation to health and social care Essay

Legislation is defined as the processor act of making law or a set of laws by the governing body of the country. They are set in place in every work setting to ensure the health and safety of the people within the area. Without these laws there would be many accidents that could harm both the employee and employer. Safety (General food hygiene) Regulations 1995 This act ensures that all food is handled correctly, the area where food is prepared must be clean, hands must be watched, hair should be covered and separate work areas should be used to prevent contamination of cooked and raw food. Following this regulation is especially important in health and social care settings such as schools, where young children are especially vulnerable to illness. All equipment, such as chopping boards and knives should be cleaned after every use to prevent contamination. Food staff should be well trained and know that food should stored and packed separately to prevent contamination. The Safety Regulation act simply enforces that all food should be prepared, stored and transported as safely and as hygienically possible. Food Safety Act 1990 The food safety act of 1990 ensures that all food is not tampered with anyway that could damage the health of people eating it, and that all food is labelled, advertised and presented in a way that is not false or misleading. This act prevents people from selling food that is not regularly eaten, it also protects the values of many people and agrees with many religious beliefs, it ensures that all food is sold with a label that states exactly what it is, for example; a butcher is not allowed to label his meat as halal if it is not halal meat. Without this regulation people could be sold food that could infect a customer with food poisoning. Fire Evacuation The Fire evacuation policy states that all public buildings have accessible fire alarms so that in the event of a fire the whole building can be alerted  and evacuated. As soon as the fire is discovered the Fire Evacuation Policy states that the fire department and medical services be called by the countries national emergency number (999 in the UK). In many schools and other work settings there are fire drills every few weeks to ensure that the children/employees are aware of the evacuation procedure. Upon hearing the fire alarm, students/employees leave the building as quickly, quietly and organised as possible, the policy states that the last person out of the room should make sure the room is locked and lights turned off to alert everyone that the room has already been cleared. As the building is being evacuated people should be directed to their designated assembly points, these assembly points are normally large open areas where the fire is not easily spread to. Storage and dispensing of medicines The main objective of this policy is to ensure safe and effective systems for the supply, storage and administration of drugs throughout the work setting and to ensure the health and wellbeing of service users. This policy ensures that all medicines are stored correctly according to instruction, as medicine that has deteriorated could potentially be life threatening. This policy is very important in work settings such as schools and hospitals, because it states that all stocks of medicine are kept to a certain minimum for routine needs and unforeseeable emergencies. The policy also ensures that all medicine is regularly restocked and any unused medicine which has reached its expiration date should be disposed of at once. This is to prevent people from getting what could be even more life threatening illness’. Cleaning Cleaning is an important part of life as it ensures that any harmful bacteria/substances are removed from the body/facility. Cleaning is especially important in work place settings such as schools and hospitals. In schools, children tend to drop things and leave things on the floor without thinking of the consequences, this can cause to problems such as tripping and falling which can cause serious injury. Public facilities should be cleaned regularly everyday to prevent the spread of illness/disease. For example in a public library, all computers should be  kept clean as many people use them without washing their hands. Keeping a clean home is also just as important as keeping public places clean, as it provides a clean and bacteria-free environment. Cleaning is also a display of personal hygiene, by taking a shower everyday and brushing our teeth twice a day. Health and Safety at Work act 1974. This act states is set in every work place and is set to ensure maximum safety of both employee/employer. The health and safety act prevents people from bringing in potentially harmful items and substances (such as weapons and drugs). This act enforces all legislations and acts, it provides the employees and employers and anyone else a safe environment to work in – this means that any machinery or equipment is carefully checked through before and after use. Employers must also do thorough background checks about the person as well as doing a CRB check with the government. This act requires checks such as risk assessment to take place, in a school, the teacher must make sure that the floor is clear of any debris that could potentially trip up or make someone fall. Risk assessment is a key factor in this act as it is the quickest method of identifying and removing risks.

The True Vision of Blindness in Oedipus Rex by Sophocles...

People may be blinded to truth, and may not realize what truth is, even if truth is standing in front of them. They will never see truth becase they are blind to it. In Oedipus Rex by Sophocles it is easy to see how blindness affects the transition of the story. It is said that blind people see â€Å"in a different manner† because they sense the world in a totally diferent way, such as Teiresias in the play. Oedipus Rex is a tragedy due to the content the Sophocles, the playwright, decided to include, first, murdering his father, king Laius, then marrying his mother, Jocasta, and ending by blinding himself. Oedipus has been blinded to the truth all his life. During his life time, Oedipus was blind to truth, at first, he did not know that Joc asta and Laius were his actual parents. He even rebelled against anyone that would not give him the reason or someone that would contradict him. After so many attempts to evade the truth, he ends up giving up about what is the actual truth. He agrees and accepts that Liaus and Jocasta were his parents, and he ended up killing his father and marrying his mother; he was the one causing hopelessness in Thebes. After he starts to realize all these truths, he decided to blind himself, and become in Teiresias same position. â€Å" And since you have reproached me with my blindness, I say – you have your sight, and do not see what evils are about you, nor with whom, nor in what home you are dwelling.† In this quote, a theme such as blindness is shown through Teiresias’ words to Oedipus, to whom he is telling that even with his physical sight, in the inside he is blind because he is unwilling to know the truth about his life. He also tells Oedipus that since he does not see the truth about his life, he doesn’t see the anguish of his life either.
